Thank you for letting us know that you are interested in being a volunteer at ARC. As you probably know, ARC provides a Counselling and Information Service in the Wokingham District.

ARC is a growing organisation, with over 50 volunteers. It is a registered charity and is supported by Wokingham District Council and other donors. It is an autonomous voluntary organisation with its own Management Committee. Our premises are next to Wokingham Youth and Community Centre. We also operate at Woodley and Lower Earley (evenings only), as well as provide counsellors to most secondary schools in the area.

Most of the work at ARC is done by volunteers who commit themselves to work with us for a variety of times but usually for a minimum of two years for three hours a week.

Most volunteers choose to take the Counselling Certificate/ Diploma Course via college or university, but there are several other ways of being involved in our work. At present we are recruiting for Support Workers, Management Representatives and Counsellors.

Clearly, you have your needs in wanting to come and work with us and it is our job to try and satisfy your needs as fully as possible. Further training and other opportunities will also be available to you.

The style of Counselling used at ARC is Active Client Centred - in other words, the worker helps the client to work out what they want and how to get it. They do this in a non-judgmental and supportive way, always accepting what the client decides. We do not have a “message” for clients; we are not anti anything or pro anything we are there simply for the clients. This approach is used in all our work with clients whether it is counselling, information work or meeting the client’s needs in other ways.

When you apply to be a volunteer and after filling out an application and police check form, you will be asked to attend an informal interview and, if successful, you may be invited to attend further training and induction.
