Drugs and Substance abuse

Using substances changes the way people feel, think & behave – they have a psychoactive effect. There are a vast number of substances that can be used to do this & when discussing issues around substance use we need to bear in mind not only the substance but also the circumstances & personality of the person involved & the context of the substance use.

There are many dimensions to substance use/ misuse – health, social, criminal justice etc. - & it is essential to be aware that there are great differences in people’s attitudes toward it. All have a voice in the ongoing debate around it. It is as well then to gather information from various sources but to remember each source has its own agenda. People must draw their own conclusions & make their own decisions around them.
